First UCSC Hackathon a Resounding Success!

Early April 5th 2014, a group of eager students, a team of amazing mentors from the Santa Cruz Tech community and UC faculty, gathered at the Oakes Learning Center to kick off our first ever Hackathon.  After proposing ideas and forming teams the Hack began.   After a grueling 32 continuous hours of coding and developing, aided by copious amounts of pizza, coffee and various other junk foods, the teams presented their ideas to a panel of judges. Now down to 6 teams it was time to head over to Terra Fresca for the final judging and dinner.  All six teams, despite lack of sleep and a slightly glazed look, did an amazing job of presenting their finished projects.

The Winners:

$4000 - Bubble Coup links coupon sharing with peoples' web communities using a cost model that is profitable to businesses and fun for users. Brian Vallelunga (, Ronnie Wilcox ( & Jashan Dhillon (

$3000 - Project Slug is an easy-to-use platform that quickly links skilled, interested people with new projets that need their expertise. Maria Lopez-Latorre (, Alexander Rowe ( & Hejia Su (

$2000 - Top 5 is a social app that quickly provides a ranking of local venues by category (restaurants, museums, outdoor venues, etc.) so people can plan outings quickly and easily in Santa Cruz.  (Also winner of the People's Choice Award of $1000) - Spencer & Elijah Butterfield ( &, aka the Butterfield Brothers!

All the ideas presented were outstanding and the fact that they were achieved in just 32 hours is mind blowing. Thank you to all who participated: Faculty, The Santa Cruz New Tech Meet-Up Group, and most of all the students who helped make this such a great success - awesome job!

See you next time......
